Dear Yogi,
Ahhh!
Summer! It is just around the corner. The long warm days and the cool
nights that we have here on the central coast. I always love summer
with all the fun activities available. It can make us extra busy
without always recognizing that we are.
There are many reasons
for all of us to keep up with our yoga practice during these busy
months! We really should never slack off during anytime of the year,
but let me give you a few reasons that it is important now.
Looking
your best! That's right! It is bikini season! I know...... most of us
will not be pulling out that little thong that wears like dental floss,
but we are usually wearing clothes that show more skin. Yoga keeps us
looking good in our shorty shorts and dresses. We need to shed those
layers from winter. We like to look toned and quite frankly, sexy.
Yoga
helps with injury prevention. Yep, with all those extra activities we
find ourselves doing....... bike riding, hiking, camping, yard work.
Yoga helps keep us limber and stronger, but you all know that already.
It is no fun to come to a screeching halt because we got hurt.
Yoga
helps to detox the body. With the already raised temperatures, we can
get an extra benefit in our yoga practice. Our bodies are already
warmed up when we enter the studio, which can lead to a greater
deepening in our bodies. Clearer, brighter skin. And, we tend to eat
lighter with the higher temps. Good all the way around.
And, for
those of us with kids...... summer can be a LONG haul! Coming into
class can be that vacation (if only for 90 minutes) that we desperately
need away from our kids. When we take care of ourselves, we can better
care for others. And, it can also aide in reduction of arrests of
parents. You know that I am kidding about that last bit....... not that
we all have not felt that on occasion.
Don't let the business
of summer be an excuse for you! To help keep you motivated, there is a
summer deal towards the bottom of the newsletter. AND, don't miss out
on our summer solstice workshop!
See you in class!
Namaste,
Danielle

Student of the Month

Each month we would like to feature "one" of our great yoga community!
Meet Stephanie Laird.
Hi. I started yoga about 8 months ago in hopes of finding relieve a
chronic lower back problem. I recently changed chiropractors (after 15
years) and started on my new doc's recommendation. It was to the
point that I was on disability and going to the chiropractor at least 3
times a week. The pain was so bad that even just getting out of bed
was horrendous. Driving was hell, back spasms and sharp pains were
constantly an issue. If I sat in one position,
such as driving or just sitting at a table, for any length of time I
would become "Locked Up". It would feel like you were stuck in the
seated position and hurt like crazy to straighten up. I had no
interest in Yoga classes but was desperate enough to try anything as
over the years I have tried just about EVERYTHING to deal with this.
As I aged, the condition just worsened. It was scary for me and
really hard to start. I felt pain without movement, how in the heck am
I going to do this? Fortunately the teachers at Yoga in the Vines
stress going to your own body's capabilities and with no judgment.
That was such a relief as I felt very weak and fragile. I started
noticing a difference in 2 to 3 weeks. I was very surprised at how
well my body "took" to yoga. After 5 weeks I wore my back brace for
the very last time. I still keep the brace in my car to remind me
how grateful I am and to keep me motivated. Now I visit my
chiropractor once every 6 weeks and it will continue to be less
frequent. He is very impressed with the results. Yoga has given me a
new life without consistent pain and the limitations that I had. More
than I ever expected. Now what I didn't expect was a better looking
and stronger body, a better outlook and mindset and just a rounded
feeling of well being. Danielle is my primary teacher at Yoga in the
Vines and she is awesome but when I can't make her class I have taken
Lauren, Kaylen, Michael and Jessica's classes too. I always leave
feeling that the instructors give so much. It's more of an
experience then just a class. When asked what my favorite pose is I
would have to say Cobra. This one for me was the hardest one to do so
to be able to go into Cobra or Up Dog reminds me how far I have come. |
