Common Questions About Yoga
We have mats & props...lots of yoga toys!
Q: Do I have to pre-register for class?

A: No, all classes are on a drop-in basis.  You choose the class and time that work best for you.  Please arrive a few minutes before your first class to fill out some brief paper work.

Q: I'm not flexible, can I still do yoga?

A: Yes, yoga will help your body become more flexible over time.  It will also help to improve overall body strength.  Please keep in mind that yoga means "union" and its aim is to unite body, mind, and spirit, which can be experienced by students of all levels.  Also, yoga is non-competitive and all students should stay within their personal limits.

Q: What type of class should I take if I've never done yoga before?

A: Newer students can begin by taking the Intro to Yoga + 3 Classes workshop or start right in with Level 1.  The slower pace and detailed instruction in these classes will help you understand basic techniques and prepare you for more challenging classes.  The Intro to Yoga workshop is not required for new students, you're welcome to start taking classes right away!

Q: What type of clothing should I wear?  Do I need any special equipment?

A: Wear clothing that is comfortable and easy to move in.  Yoga is practiced barefoot on a "sticky" mat which provides traction for hands and feet so that you don't slip, therefore, be prepared to remove your shoes and socks.  Yoga in the Vines has mats and other props available for your use, so you don't need to bring anything with you.

Q: What if I have an injury or can't do a pose?

A: It is best to advise your instructor before class if you are working with a specific condition so that he or she will be able to help you modify poses to avoid furthering any injuries.  If a situation arises in class that you feel pain or discomfort, always "back off" from the pose and ask the instructor for guidance.  All of our instructors are highly qualified and able to modify or provide alternative poses, which are equally beneficial.  Yoga is designed to help reduce suffering, be sure to listen to your body and enjoy class.

Q: Is there anything else I need to know?

A: Please turn off cell phones and all other electronic devices prior to class so that all may enjoy class free of distraction.  Avoid wearing heavy perfumes or lotions as others may be sensitive to strong smells.  Yoga should be done on a semi-empty stomach, avoid eating in the two hours before class.  If you do need to eat, try something small like a piece of fruit.  Finally, be patient and know that changes occur over time and that with regular practice you will experience growth.
